Everything You Need to Know about IELTS Academic Writing Test
IELTS Academic Writing test aims to check whether you can write clearly, logically, and formally in English at a level suitable for university study. In just 60 minutes, you must complete two different writing tasks: a short report describing visual information (Task 1) and a longer essay responding to a question or statement (Task 2). Together, these tasks assess how well you can interpret data, organise ideas into coherent paragraphs, and use appropriate academic vocabulary and grammar under time pressure—skills that are essential both for achieving your target IELTS band score and for coping with real academic assignments.
Timing
Candidates must complete both tasks in 60 minutes.
Weighting
Task 2 carries twice as much weight as Task 1 in the overall Writing band score, so under‑developing Task 2 can significantly reduce the final band.

Task 1 – Visual/diagram report
- Materials: One or more graphs, charts, tables, maps, or a process/diagram (object, device, or event) that visually presents data or stages.
- Task: Summarise, describe, or explain the key features, trends, or stages, highlighting main points and making comparisons where relevant.
- Requirements: At least 150 words, written in an academic or semi‑formal/neutral style; no personal opinions, examples, or bullet points.
- Focus: Selecting and grouping the most important data or stages, not listing every detail.

Task 2 – Academic essay
- Question types: advantages/disadvantages, opinion, discussion, problem–solution, or two-part question.
- Task: Write a formal essay that clearly addresses all parts of the question, states a position where required, and supports it with explanations and relevant examples.
- Requirements: At least 250 words in about 40 minutes, using full sentences and paragraphs (no notes or bullet points).
- Focus: Clear overall structure (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion) with logically developed arguments and tightly relevant content.

Assessment criteria
Certified examiners award bands (0–9) for four equally weighted criteria:
- Task achievement (Task 1) / Task response (Task 2): How fully and appropriately the task is answered, including coverage of key features in Task 1 and well‑supported arguments in Task 2.
- Coherence and cohesion (Task 1 / Task 2): How logically ideas are organised and linked, including effective paragraphing and appropriate use of cohesive devices (linking words, pronouns, conjunctions).
- Lexical resource (Task 1 / Task 2): Range, accuracy, and appropriacy of vocabulary, including correct word choice, collocation, and spelling.
- Grammatical range and accuracy (Task 1 / Task 2): Variety and correctness of sentence structures, verb forms, and punctuation.
Task 1 and Task 2 are each scored on these four criteria, with Task 2 carrying double weight to produce the overall Writing band.
