An Overview of IELTS Writing Task 1

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 test checks whether you can write a short, clear report describing visual information such as graphs, charts, tables, maps, or process diagrams. It is worth one‑third of your overall Writing score. Instead of giving opinions, your job is to pick out the most important features, describe trends and comparisons, and organise this information logically using accurate academic language.

Timing

You must write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes, within the total 60 minutes for the whole Writing test (Tasks 1 + 2).

Purpose

The goal is to produce an objective, factual summary of the most important information shown in the visuals by selecting and reporting key features, making clear comparisons, and describing overall trends or main changes. You should not give opinions or personal examples.

Visuals used

  • Data visuals: bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, tables, or a combination of these.
  • Maps: showing changes in a place over time or differences between two locations.
  • Process/diagram: showing stages in a manufacturing process, natural cycle, or how a device works.

Paragraph planning

A standard high‑band response usually has 4 short paragraphs:

  1. Introduction – Paraphrase the question statement in 1–2 sentences.
  2. Overview – Summarise the main trends, differences, or stages without specific numbers.
  3. Body paragraph 1 – Describe key details for one group of data or one part of the process/map.
  4. Body paragraph 2 – Describe the remaining key details and comparisons.

This structure helps you show both a “big picture” view and accurate detail in a logical order.

Assessment criteria

Examiners give you a band score for four equally weighted criteria:

  • Task Achievement: Have you selected and summarised the main features, used an overview, reached 150+ words, and avoided unnecessary detail or opinions?
  • Coherence and Cohesion: Is your report logically organised, with clear paragraphs and effective linking?
  • Lexical Resource: Do you use a range of accurate, appropriate vocabulary (especially for describing data and change)?
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Do you use a variety of correct sentence structures and tenses?

Task 1 is then combined with Task 2 (which has double weight) to form your overall Writing band.

  • Bar charts (comparing categories or years);
  • Pie charts (indicating proportions/percentages); and
  • Tables (listing numerical data in rows and columns).

The less common ones are:

  • Combinations of visuals (e.g. table + bar chart, line + pie); and

Which topics come up most often?

The topic areas in the visuals are usually everyday, neutral subjects rather than specialised academic fields.

Some very common topic themes include:

  • Population and demographics (e.g. country populations, age groups, urban vs rural, migration figures);
  • Education and training (e.g. school enrolments, literacy rates, subject choices, time spent studying);
  • Transport and travel (e.g. ways of commuting, passenger numbers on public transport, reasons for choosing different transport modes);
  • Consumer behaviour and spending (e.g. household expenditures, spending on different goods or services, use of technology); and
  • Environment and energy (e.g. recycling rates, energy sources, water use, pollution or waste figures).

Do I need a conclusion or an overview?

You need an overview that highlights the main trends or key features of the visual, not a conclusion that repeats or summarizes all points again.

Conclusion

By asking test‑takers to summarise graphs, tables, maps, or processes in at least 150 words, IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 checks their ability to identify key features, describe trends and comparisons, and use appropriate academic language. For students preparing for university study, building the skills required in this task—fast data analysis, concise reporting, and accurate use of vocabulary and grammar—supports both a stronger IELTS Writing score and the kinds of report‑writing they will meet in real academic work.
