How to Deal with Mixed Visuals in IELTS Writing Task 1
Mixed visuals (also called combination charts) appear when two different types of graphics are presented together. They test your ability to handle two different data sets, connect them logically, and write a cohesive report that covers both. Before writing, identify the two or three most striking patterns from each chart. These will form the basis of your overview paragraph.

Step 6: Write the Body Paragraphs
For this task, grouping by chart works well—one paragraph for the bar chart and one for the line graph.
Body Paragraph 1 (Bar Chart - Expenditure by Income Group): Regarding expenditure, high-income earners allocated most of their budget to hamburgers at 45 pence weekly, while spending only 15-20 pence on fish and chips and pizza. Average-income earners also preferred hamburgers at 33 pence, with pizza attracting the lowest spending at 12 pence. Low-income consumers spent the least overall, ranging from 7 to 14 pence per item, though fish and chips was their top choice at 17 pence.
Body Paragraph 2 (Line Graph - Consumption Trends): Turning to consumption, fish and chips dominated in 1970 at 300 grams weekly, far exceeding hamburgers at 90 grams and pizza at 20 grams. However, hamburger consumption surged to 500 grams by 1990, becoming the most popular item, while pizza rose steeply to nearly 300 grams. In contrast, fish and chips declined steadily to 200 grams.
