What is Task Achievement in IELTS Writing Task 1 and how to reach Band 7+?

Examiners focus on four key questions:

• Have you clearly summarised the main trends or key features instead of describing every number?
• Have you highlighted significant comparisons (big differences, highest/lowest, major changes)?
• Have you included enough accurate detail (data, figures, stages, locations) to support your overview?
• Have you followed the task instructions (e.g. written at least 150 words, reported data, not given opinions)?

For Band 7+, you must do all of these consistently and accurately.

Overview

Band 6: May be unclear, too general, or incomplete; sometimes missing.

Band 7: Clear overview summarising main trends / key features.

Coverage of data

Band 6: Describes some key features but may miss important ones or include too much detail.

Band 7: Covers all main features clearly; focuses on the most important patterns/comparisons.

Detail and support

Band 6: Includes some data, but comparisons may be limited or uneven.

Band 7: Supports overview with well-chosen, accurate data and clear comparisons.

Relevance

Band 6: Give some unnecessary or minor details; may describe everything in order.

Band 7: Selects and groups relevant information; avoids trivial details.

Task fulfilment

Band 6: Mostly describes the visual but may partially misunderstand or underdevelop it.

Band 7: Fully and appropriately fulfils the task, with no major omissions or misinterpretations.

Question:

The line chart below shows the percentage of households with internet access in three countries between 2000 and 2020.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Band 6

Introduction + Overview

“The line graph shows the percentage of households with internet access in three countries between 2000 and 2020. Overall, the percentages changed over time in all three countries.”

• Overview is vague: “percentages changed over time” – no mention of overall increase, which country ends highest/lowest, or who grew most.

Detail paragraph

“In 2000, about 20% of households in Country A had internet access, which was higher than Country B at around 15% and Country C at about 10%. In 2005, all three countries increased and Country A reached around 35%, while Country B and Country C were about 25% and 20% respectively. In 2010, Country A was about 55%, Country B was around 45% and Country C was about 30%. In 2015, they continued to grow to approximately 70%, 60% and 40%. By 2020, they reached around 80% for Country A, 70% for Country B and 50% for Country C.”

• Simply lists data year by year without clear grouping or highlighted comparisons.
• The key features are not clearly selected or emphasised.

Band 7

Introduction

“The line graph compares the proportion of households with internet access in three countries between 2000 and 2020.”

• The question is rewritten as the introduction by paraphrasing.

Overview

“Overall, internet access rose steadily in all three countries throughout the period, with Country A consistently having the highest proportion and Country C remaining the lowest. In addition, the gap between Country A and the other two nations widened over time.”

• Clear overview stating main trends and comparisons (all increased; A highest; C lowest; gap widened).

Detail paragraph 1

“At the beginning of the period, around one fifth of households in Country A had internet access, compared with roughly 15% in Country B and just 10% in Country C. Over the next decade, all three countries saw substantial growth, but Country A’s figure climbed more rapidly, reaching about 55% by 2010, while Country B and Country C lagged behind at approximately 45% and 30% respectively.”

Detail paragraph 2

“Between 2010 and 2020, this upward trend continued. By 2015, around 70% of homes in Country A were connected to the internet, compared with about 60% in Country B and 40% in Country C. By the end of the period, internet access had reached approximately 80% of households in Country A, whereas the figures for Country B and Country C were lower, at around 70% and 50%, confirming that Country A maintained a clear lead throughout.”

• Detail paragraphs support the overview with grouped data (early period vs later period).
• Key features (faster growth in A, persistent gap, relative positions) are highlighted, not just listed.

The overview is the heart of Task Achievement. It is usually 1–3 sentences that summarise the most important features without numbers.

For graphs/charts, an effective overview:

• Mentions overall trends (increase, decrease, stability, fluctuations).
• Highlights extremes (highest/lowest) or major differences.
• States any obvious patterns (e.g. “all countries increased”, “older age groups spent more”, “online sales overtook in-store sales”).

For processes/maps, an overview:

• States the overall purpose (“This process shows how X is produced/occurs”).
• Highlights the main stages or big changes (e.g. “from raw material to finished product”, “the area becomes more residential and less industrial”).

Band 6 often has a weak or missing overview. Band 7 has a clear, accurate one.

You are not expected to describe every number or every tiny change.

At Band 7+, you:

• Choose 2–4 main features to focus on (biggest changes, striking contrasts, general patterns).
• Group similar data together instead of jumping randomly.
• Ignore unimportant small fluctuations unless the task is specifically about them.

Ask yourself:

• What increased the most?
• What decreased the most?
• What is consistently higher/lower?
• What changed direction? (e.g. from increase to decrease)

If you try to cover everything, your writing becomes a list and Task Achievement suffers.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in IELTS Writing Task 1

After the overview, your detail paragraphs should:

• Present data that directly supports the overview.
• Use accurate figures and time points (years, categories, percentages, numbers).
• Make clear comparisons (higher than, lower than, roughly the same, twice as much).

Band 7+ detail paragraphs:

• Group data logically (e.g. “countries with higher values vs lower values,” “start vs end of the period”).
• Connect sentences with comparisons, not just “X was 20, Y was 25, Z was 30.”

Task Achievement drops when you do the wrong kind of writing.

Don’ts

• Explain reasons or give opinions (“I think…”, “This is because…”).
• Predict the future unless the chart shows future data.
• Copy the question.

Dos

• Stick to the figures and report the facts.
• Paraphrase the question.

Your job is to report what you see, not to argue or analyse socially.
